Superintendent of Schools, Jefferson County (KY) Public Schools
In July 2007, Sheldon Berman became Superintendent of the Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Kentucky, a district that serves more than 98,000 students and employs more than 5,700 teachers.
From 1993 to 2007, Dr. Berman was Superintendent of Schools for the Hudson, MA, district. At Hudson, he initiated innovations in civic education, social-emotional learning, service learning, mathematics and science reform, high school restructuring, teacher evaluation, and computer technology. Dr. Berman was the developer and Co-Principal Investigator of the Virtual High School Collaborative, funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
In 1981, Dr. Berman founded Educators for Social Responsibility and served as its president from 1986-1993.
A Past-President of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (MASS), Dr. Berman is the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Association of School Administrators’ President’s Technology Award for vision and leadership in technology integration (2005).
He is the author or editor of two books and numerous articles on. Dr. Berman holds an Ed.D. in educational administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he received his master's degree. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
